Thanks for yet another reivew on Ado, Chris! Like you said, it’s very chaotic and almost broken-sounding – which goes well with the animation which hits hard.
I wanna say, if you have time, please listen to Ado’s cover of the song Hinderance by Syudou. She made this cover when she was 15, and it’s cool to see how her vocals evolved over time!
she talked about how shes been practicing the guitar the last couple years, and wrote the guitar sections of the song herself, and she apparently plays the guitar when she sings it live as well! she also wrote the lyrics for the song when she was 17, either right before, or shortly after her debut, when she was in a dark space mentally, wondering if she deserved the recognition she was receiving.

I’ve been waiting for your reaction since the minute the song was released. This song is obviously a very deep one and I personally think it’s a masterpiece, I did a multiple hour analysis of the song and music video and just wrote down my interpretation and viewpoint (most of it being opinion on the visuals and lyrics). Thanks for yet again another fantastic reaction. Also this song was wrote by her before Usseewa but she never released it as she hated the lyrics I believe, but now she’s grown up a bit and has altered some of the lyrics. She also played the guitar in her live performance of Shoka

The lyric “I don’t know anything, so here I am singing” really hits cause Ado has talked about her doubts of being able to find any other kind of work if hey music career didn’t succeed.

Ado also has mentioned that when she was younger, she was bullied quite bit for her hobbies and being too shy. She wrote this song originally in high school, so I wonder how much of that experience is showing in this song :/

Ado is evolving as we speak. I was at her most recent tour, “The Profile (side view) of Mona Lisa,” and the theme she had for it was to show a new side of her and she whipped out the guitar to play in front of the entire crowd. She had posted a clip of her singing Himawari (Sunflower) on an acoustic guitar on X last year as she commented that she’s been practicing recently.
In the past, she explained that the reason why she considered herself an “Utaite” instead of an “Artist” was because she didn’t write her own songs. Well, she dug up a song she wrote when she was 17, brushed it up and performed it in front of tens of thousands of people so I guess we can call her an artist now. She also prefaced this song being very raw which we very quickly found out to be true.

I think this song is a True masterpiece. I relate with it on a deep personal level. It can have many different interpretations in my opinion. It can be about many people being trapped within the cage of being kind to others, while being depressed when they think they aren’t good enough. It can be about a feeling of anger towards parents who wanted their children to be a doctor, teacher, priest or someone else who has a work that has meaning. I’m leaning towards the first interpretation of this song, which is obviously heartbreaking.💔 But I want to send a message to many people who might be reading this. Don’t try to please others. Do it only if You really want it. And if You think that You aren’t good enough for someone- do everything to be just good enough for Yourself. Because if You can’t treat Yourself with kindness, how can You treat others with kindness? You would not only trick others by acting like that, but You would be lieing to Yourself. So I beg everyone who is reading this message: Start with being good to Yourself. Great reaction and analyzing.👍😃

Here is my interpretation. At the end of the MV, Ado, after having watched the MV, tweets “What?”. It’s like she’s telling herself “Why did you do that? What’s your point?” I think that is quite nice summary of this song. Ado might have problems believing that what she does is important or good. In the lyrics she wants us to reassure her or even make us command on what she should do “Tell me”. She tries to use philosophy or reason to make herself believe in herself, but reason on it’s own cannot help her. Then we have “I don’t know anything, so here I am singing” – Ado feels lost, and doesn’t know what to do. She sees arrogance in being an artist, because it means choosing one thing and rejecting every other thing. That it’s like saying “What I do is important”. The meaning of word Ado is that of a supporting actor, and Ado was supposed to support, us listeners. The “words pour out endlessly” in this song, because the inner person in Ado took over control and does not care what people will think. This is a sign of self-love. She is able to show to the world a darker side of herself, which she doubts that “will save lives”, but is an important part of her life.
She is just trying to believe that what she does as a singer and an artist is a good thing. But she doesn’t want to be delusional, she understands the complexity of this world, and she cares deeply about her dreams, the people and the world. She would like to be able to love herself.

Amazing reaction and analysis, I wasn’t expecting any less from you! Also for the record, she wrote it at 17 and she said on Twitter it actually wasn’t the first song she wrote, but rather the first one she felt comfortable releasing. She revised it for the release, but yeah it was more her younger self in the lyrics here, as she was dealing with anxiety and even depression a lot more back then. But she recently said at her Japan National Stadium concerts (which brought 140k people in two days by the way) that she has started loving herself more and be self-confident, and I feel like releasing this dark and emotional piece of her soul is the most beautiful proof of it. On a last note, she plays this song on guitar live too!

It’s amazing the willingness of Ado being willing to expose herself this much to her audience with the lyrics. The composition was also great with the effects not only adding a fun and interesting sound but also exemplifying and further drawing out the emotion in Ado’s voice. Overall, an amazing piece by Ado.
Also, I would like to thank you Chris Liepe for making these amazing analysis videos. The fact you don’t only just say what these singers are doing with voices, but you actually show how to do it and teach it makes these videos so amazing and stand out. As a result, I’ve been able to learn more about voice techniques that go into the songs I enjoy, and I thank you for that.
May I suggest analyzing a song from Mili? Mili’s songs are very interesting and unique, and I would be curious to hear your thoughts on the vocal approach to Mili’s songs. My personal recommendation for a song to analyze would be World.execute (me) ;.
Ado has been doing something pretty interesting recently, she started an Idol group called Phantom Theater (Phantom Shiita direct translation from katakana) and theyve uploaded some videos of Ado coaching each of the singers while they perform and record in the booth, giving guidance on their vocal tone, placement and performance. Even if its not worth making a video on, i think you might find it interesting!

There’s a small subtlety in the lyrics if you don’t know some Japanese. When referring to herself, she uses “boku” which is a more male first person pronoun.
The more feminine first person pronoun would be watashi or atashi.
Whether this is in any way significant, I cannot say.
Ado is one of those musicians who, in her art, is driven and guided by her inner demons, her self doubt, her depressions and her doubt of her own talent. In the past those artists usually turned out to be the brightest ones in the industry before burning out fast…The famous “Club 27” is a prime example of them. We hardly have artists like her left today since most musicians we get nowadays are full of their own Ego and believe themself to be the greatest. Unfortunately the best music comes from suffering and not from success. I love Ado’s music and I do hope that she will find happiness and never joins Club 27…

This is just the vocal analysis we were waiting for!!! I knew we had to have you discuss THE SCREAM at 16:20. She has mentioned in many interviews that she has suffered a lot of self-hatred since her childhood, hating her looks, having difficulty loving herself, and being teased at school for being an introvert and otaku. It’s apparent that all the angst she has had since her childhood is fuelling her intense vocals. And probably because she is a Scorpio 🦂She’s also mentioned that she locks herself into a studio and records the vocals alone without an engineer. She said sometimes does 50-60 takes on one line until it sounds perfect. Hope Ado appears on your channel so you can interview her and pick her brain. We’d all love to see that!

I knew it would be heavy from the visuals alone however listening properly to the lyrics made me emotional. Hopefully she can find a good balance between work and private life. Because this song make me think she might be stressing about such thing.
There are some videos where Ado is talking to the band that she’s producing (Phantom Siita), there she is coaching them on how she would prefer the different parts to sound. That might give you an insight into her thought process!

This new song is written and composed by Ado. Although the studio version is played by others, she plays the guitar herself in the concert.
This is a very personal work.
From the MV, we can see that Ado, who has received various honors as an adult, faces her childhood self and the self she expected at that time and questions herself (I believe that this is also what many people have done).
Maybe her creative style caused her to suffer from some “post-dramatic stress disorder”. Judging from her early works, she may not have intended to go to such an extreme style as now, but after all, social phenomena show that she became famous because of this.
