The evil genius of the Republicans was that even before the bodies of those initial victims of Hamas assumed ambient temperature the Republicans had a narrative of how this was all Biden’s fault , and that the Democrats were all card carrying members of Hamas. They formed that narrative of lies and had the news outlets saturated with it before the gun smoke cleared and the cries of the dying ceased. That level of evil to exploit the suffering of others to gain power is breath taking. I’m impressed.
Backing out of the deal is exactly what Trump would do! Why? 🤷 Because his ego is more important than civilian lives!
This would not have been as much of an issue if TFG hadn’t thrown the Iran Nuclear Deal on the ground and pissed on it. The Obama administration (and the rest of the UN SC plus Germany) had a deal with Iran that was set to fix – over the long term – issues with the aging Ayatollah’s and the emerging youth of Iran who wanted something better. Trump threw all of that out the window, enabling the hard-liners in Iran and intercoursing the Middle East for another generation.
The problem is that Iran is probably the only possible avenue the government has to find out where the US hostages in Gaza are because Mossad is clueless. I’d guess they’re going try to renegotiate the deal to include securing thier release too.
If the money went to help trump and family, and maybe some MAGA people, then maybe the rest of the republican politicians would be happy. ( As long as none of it goes to help poor people who really need it.)

It’s hard to talk about this situation. It makes me sick to my stomach.
I’ve seen an Israeli tour guide use the same talking points of Russia’s about Ukraine when they talked about the Palestinians are not a real people. And argue for collective punishment. It’s also hard to defend Palestinians when Hamas the de facto government has committed so many atrocities and villainous acts.
I don’t know how to even help bring information in a way that doesn’t use loaded words. Even the proper names, ethnicities, and religion are triggering for people.
We should always support humanitarian aid and support groups that want secular social democracy for their people

Trump canceled the treaty, effectively giving Iran a green light to pursue its ambitions.

The US government not following through on a promise? Unheard of. Reminds me of a friend that I loaned money to that was going to pay me next payday. That payday was 35 years ago. Still no money. Backing out on a promise will cause everyone to not ever make deals with you.
I think rediverting it to helping those affected in the current crisis is probably the smartest. Behind the scenes it would probably be explained to Iran as, “Hey, we’re pretty sure you or someone in your intelligence bureau had a hand in this, so this money is going to go help the people affected by this. Are you going to go out there on the global stage and admit why we’re doing this? Didn’t think so.” It’s a pretty bleak and jaded out look, but I’m fairly certain it’s been done before. And no, our government is not above using a tactic like that. But the side affect of that kind of political flexing would be that the money IS helping SOMEONE in need of humanitarian aide. I guess the only question for any one person is; can you live with that?

We have paid some of it back but not till after the (greedy ,thieving banks) had leveraged the Iranian peoples money for all it was worth and used it to pummel other governments to this date. This same Federal Reserve has failed to assist the 98% to survive these Republican contrived inflation increases by jerking the 98% who borrow while the Wealthy borrow nothing , so in effect , the rich cause inflation to create discontent and suffering and then enlist the Federal Reserve to increase the lending rate which again only punishes the Working people with the assumption that these higher interest rates will stop the inflation that the 1% and the Republican Party creates. Time for a National Banking System and abolition of these self serving Zealots that keep the poor , poor and the wealthy ,wealthier beyond any reasoning.

So pleased I now have a really brief reply to those around me asking what I think about all the tax money going to Iran. “It’s not taxpayer money; the US froze Iranian accounts, then took Iran’s money from those frozen accounts, saying it would remain frozen then distributed from Qatar upon US decisions on where it should go.” Maybe too wordy still, but it does repeat “frozen” three times.

If Iran wanted to help them they;d let them immigrate, because as much as it is one of the greatest wrongs of our time, they’ll never know peace in their own land, just like the Jews needed a place to flee evil in their own land, the European countries where they lived for centuries. And the sad thing is that money was meant for humanitarian purposes. So it sounds to me like maybe the pressure on both countries is causing us to not give humanitarian aid where it’s needed because of the lie. Just love this current climate.
The U.S. reneging on a deal is pretty much expected by now.
Honestly, I think it’s a lousy idea even before considering the captives; it was supposed to be for humanitarian aid, and cutting that off because of a conflict that, while Iran is likely at least somewhat involved in, is not in Iran seems like punishing poor people for the action of the rich and powerful.
Don’t get me wrong, i want our captives back, and I support the use of money we couldn’t even possibly use to do so, but I’m just tired of all the ways in which governments are taking their (public appearance of) anger out on poor people that didn’t do anything wrong.
Edit to add: I like Beau’s idea, but I’m still iffy about backing out of a deal. There’s plenty of frozen assets from Russia and other adversarial nations we could try to use for the same purpose that Beau suggested, and frankly, I would love to see some Russian Oligarch’s property liquidated to help people displaced by this conflict.
I would think Iran expects not getting that money once Israel is attacked. I think Biden did the right thing. The Americans who somehow captured by Iran need to stay there longer. How would anyone expects speedy exchange during a war in Israel is beyond me.

One seemingly valid concern I have heard is that if Iran spends money from the $6 billion, that will free up government money that they would have had to use. So if they use $1 billion from the fund to buy legitimate items, that frees up government money to fund terrorist groups. Has anyone seen that part debunked?

A few months ago I went to my long term hairdresser, who is a an Iranian female, who lived in Iran for years and now is a U.S. citizen.
